How Payload and Towing Capacity is Determined

When looking at payload capacity and towing capacity, they are easily confused. However, there are fundamental differences as well as other differences between the two. One of the key differences between towing and payload is the method of carrying the items. This is one of the reasons that knowing the difference is important.

One key factor in payload is how it is determined. The way payload is determined is based on the GVWR, which is the total weight of the vehicle, and what it can handle. Once you find the GVWR, you just have to subtract the weight of the vehicle from it. Then you have the payload.

With towing, you are pulling a trailer. Therefore, the weight is not going to be directly on the truck. In this case, the towing capacity is going to be determined by the strength of the frame, transmission, and torque of the engine.
